Hydrochloric Acid: Uses and Benefits in Life

Jun. 01, 2022

Hydrochloric acid is a strong corrosive acid that is used in industry to process steel used in the building and construction industry. It is used in the chemical industry for the mass production of vinyl chloride used in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, and is one of the chemicals used in the production of polyurethane foam and calcium chloride.

Hydrochloric acid is also used in the manufacture of many other chemicals and as a disinfectant and mucicidal agent, a chemical that prevents the growth of slime in paper pulp.

Steel production

Hydrochloric acid is used in pickling operations to remove rust and other impurities from carbon, alloys and stainless steel in preparation for final applications in construction and building projects and products such as automobile bodies and household appliances. It is also used in aluminum etching and metal cleaning applications.

Household cleaners

Hydrochloric acid can be an ingredient in household cleaners such as toilet bowl cleaners, bathroom tile cleaners and other porcelain cleaners because of its caustic properties that help clean stubborn stains.

Swimming Pool Sanitation

Hydrochloric acid is used as a swimming pool treatment chemical to help maintain optimal pH levels in the water. You can follow XINLONGWEI to see more of our products.

Food production and processing

The food industry uses hydrochloric acid to process a variety of foods, such as corn syrup for soft drinks, cookies, crisps, ketchup and cereals. Hydrochloric acid is also used as an acidifying agent in sauces, vegetable juices and canned foods to help enhance flavor and reduce spoilage.

Calcium Chloride Production

When hydrochloric acid is mixed or reacted with limestone, calcium chloride, a salt used for de-icing roads, is produced. Calcium chloride is also used as a stabilizer and curing agent in food production, such as in baked goods, and as an antimicrobial agent.

Other uses

Hydrochloric acid is used in the production of batteries, flash bulbs and fireworks. It is also used in leather processing, building construction, oil well acidification and the production of gelatin products.

Caution! Dangers

Concentrated hydrochloric acid has a strong, irritating odor and is highly corrosive. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, exposure may cause damage, such as chemical burns. Ingestion of concentrated hydrochloric acid can cause serious injury to the mouth, throat, esophagus and stomach. When handling hydrochloric acid, use personal protective equipment , such as vapor-proof respirators, rubber gloves, splash-proof goggles and face shields. If used in the workplace, it is recommended to have an eye wash to prevent accidental exposure.

When using pool cleaners containing hydrochloric acid (also known as muriatic acid), always follow the instructions on the product label for safe handling.
